Scorpions struggled early on with only 11 players fit for this game, but with some fierce tackling and good all round team work never looked completely out of the game.
Tierney, Phelps and Revell lead the charge and with Armstrong and Winter making good meters at every drive Scorpions looked in good shape. A few basic errors led to the home side running in several tries out wide but all but one of the conversions were successful. Scorpions had a good spell of pressure later on in the first half, when Stewart and Revell both went close only to be held up over the line by the Lions defence. In the second period Scorpions hit a purple patch when everything clicked into place. Tierney brilliantly collected the ball from deep, side stepped several defenders and headed for the line. From the next play Scorpions passed through quick hands to Downing who dived over under the posts. Great work from Armstrong enabled Phelps and Revell to combine well splitting the home sides defence. Winter went close and from the next play Stewart dived over. The third try was a great team effort. Tierney kicked high, Phelps collected and charged towards the line. The ball was passed across the attacking line, eventually off loaded to Stewart for his second try under the posts. Phelps kicked his third conversion. West Houghton were limited to only a few breaks out of their own half. They did manage to score four more tries to put the game out of reach of the visitors but they had to work hard for the 2 points. Pick of the bunch were; Stewart, Phelps Walker and man of the match Tierney.
