Scorpions completed their NWC division 3 games with a tough home fixture against Warrington side Culcheth Eagles. Culcheth needing to win the game to cement runners up spot in the division and a chance of being promoted to division 2 next season. Scorpions started slowly again, like last week allowing the visitors to run in a quick try straight from kick off. The home side then had to muscle up in defence to deny Culcheth taking a grip on the game early on. Joe Phelps, Jordan Tierney and George Higgins led the defensive effort and with quick thinking from centre Connor Walker regained possession and started to make good meters down field. Scott Butler, Tom Downing and James Armstrong powered forward and when Jordan Tierney kicked high James Revell collected and raced over for a well deserved try just before the interval. Culcheth continued to work hard and on the back of a few controversial refereeing decisions managed to score another converted try shortly before half time. Scorpions came out fired up for the second half Joe Phelps continually caused problems with his jinking runs and accurate kicks, Jordan Tierney combined well with the forward packs and seemed to be bossing the game. Culcheth wanted this victory more than the home side and showed slick handling skills to run in another four tries from out wide. Scorpions never say die attitude was rewarded when good runs from Aiden Stewart, Tom Downing and Scott Butler enabled Jordan Tierney to kick high and centre Connor Walker rose high above several players and collected the ball and scored a well worked converted try. Connor Ratcliffe tackled relentlessly all the game. Oliver Winter drove hard at every opportunity and with hooker Joe Roberts distributing well all around the field it was all in all a good team performance and a good finishing point for the season. Scorpions now can look forward to next season when new coaches Karl Davies and Mark Holden have a solid base of a team to build on for the 2010/2011 season at U16’s. Pick of the bunch were: Joe Roberts, George Higgins, Jordan Tierney and man of the match James Revell.
